On the 101 km hike around the Piz Bernina, around the entire Bernina mountain, you will experience an extraordinarily beautiful landscape as well as three cultural areas in a bordering region. Border regions are often also peripheral regions - regions where, due to their remoteness, their own fascinating cultures have developed - you will experience and enjoy them up close.
Before the hike through the idyllic Val Roseg we get to know the Engadine village Pontresina with its typical houses and sights. The destination is the Hotel Roseggletscher.
With fantastic views of the glacier world, we climb from Hotel Roseggletscher to Fuorcla Surlej. Furthermore, our "Panorama-Path" leads us, slowly losing altitude, high over the Engadine lakes to Maloja.
Passing through forest and marshy landscapes, we reach Lake Cavloc. Then it goes steeper and steeper through the lonely Murettotal to the pass (2562 m). On a historic mule track we descend towards Alpe Oro. Then up again to Alpe Fora and on to the Longoni Hut CAI (Club Alpino Italiano).
The 4th part of the "Alta Via della Valmalenco" is on our way today. High above the valley along the mountain side, to Alpe Roggione, 2000 m. Continue to Bocchel de Torno and via Dosso dei Vetti to Campo Franscia.
At the beginning we drive to the dam of Lago di Gera and reach the crown of the wall via a dizzying concrete ramp (harmless). We reach Alpe Gembré on the lakeside path, some of which is carved into rock. The ascent to the Pass da Canfinal (2628 m) brings us back to Switzerland. On a high-altitude trail, head high above Val Poschiavo to Cavaglia.
The day begins with a visit to the glacier mills in the glacier garden. Afterwards we take the train to Alp Grüm. With wonderful views of the Pushlav and the glacier world we hike to Sassal Mason and further into the wide valley of the Bernina Pass to the bottom station of the Diavolezza gondola. The gondola takes us floating on the Diavolezza and to one of the most beautiful views in the Alpine region. At almost 3000 m above sea level we spend the night in the sight of the glaciated three- and four-thousand-metre peaks.
The sunrise is on the ridge path to Munt Pers, 3207 m. The magnificent 360° panorama on the summit is certainly the highlight of our Bernina hike. We descend again to the Diavolezza and start the last stage through the Val Bernina to Morteratsch. Once at Morteratsch our long hike is over and we then go home individually on the train.
